In Like a Lion and Out Like a Lamb, or not.
In like a lion, out like a lamb is proving true this March with gentle rain and warm temperatures today. Of course, there’s a heck of a thunderstorm coming Sunday. My friend Jim, who lives in North Carolina, says they are about ten miles from the wildfires, and the fires are heading closer. I went through that with a friend who lived in N California a couple of years ago. She is now safely ensconced here in Ohio. We went out to see her and, on an excursion out to see the redwoods, literally had the fire just to our back as we tore down mountain roads out of danger; had the fire shifted while we were heading north, and had it gotten between us and the safer spot in Shasta City, we’d have been in real trouble. My daughter was frantic; as Dan drove back switched mountain roads, I was taking pictures out the back window of the flames and smoke and helicopters fighting the flames and sending them home. On that same visit, we had been held up by a landslide, experienced a mild earthquake, and stopped next to the Pacific Ocean, where a sign warned of rip tides and sharks. Quite the place to live…and having not thought of all the ramifications, I sent home pics of it all to the kids back home, not thinking how nuts that was, they were holding a prayer chain meeting to get us out of California alive and in one piece. I was more adventurous in those days. My guardian angel may have retired after that trip.
Today, I indulged myself in buying two crested ducklings. Yes, I know I went in for some heritage breed chickens to add to my flock, but they didn’t have any, and these two sweet little ducklings were looking just like I remember them looking when I was a child. Crested ducks are on old heritage variety; they end up with a cross between a mullet and a mohawk puffball when their adult plumage comes in. They have been known since the 1660s, are hardy, and make good pets. The CBW is already in love with them and has tried to slip them potato chips and chocolate cookies she filched from the grocery bags, waiting for me to put them away in the kitchen.
