I think we are most the time, but when flystrike occurs, I am not so certain.
Again yet, the rain returns; however, it did not dissuade me from heading to the Swappers’ Meet at Mt. Hope Auction House and buying a pair if diamond doves and a pair of crested canaries. They are happily ensconced in my aviary and making friends.
We just bought 32 bales of hay for the alpaca. They are in love with the new hay, and they always are until the next batch from us or a different farm comes along.
We had a nasty incident with Molly, our dominant female. She was attacked by flies and the eggs laid developed into a nasty thing called flystrike. It can kill them in a few hours; basically being eaten alive and when the worms dig deep enough to hit the spinal cord or other organ, the animal dies. We called the vet but he could not come until the end of the day and that could be too late. Dan and I got to work with cleaners, tweezers, cotton balls, and wound dressing. We worked on her three times pulling the maggots off, scraping them, debriding dead flesh, pouring lidocaine on the wounds to stop pain. The vet finally came and complimented us on the work; then proceeded to spray Molly’s tail with fly killer. Her tail was completely bare and an open wound; he injected her with broad spectrum antibiotics and ivermectin and topical painkillers. She is so much better; the flies are gone, the wound is raw but clean and she is up and about. She’s expecting and for a few horrid hours we thought she was going to abort. Baby and mama are safe.
However, I was able to complete the new cover and re-edit of Piper’s Dilemma and it will be available shortly. I’ll run a special on the set when it’s all done.
