It took a week of hard work and the judicious use of a back hoe but our creek is now healthy again. Thatch and trash had accumulated from the big ancient drain pipe and clogged it to the point that good water from the small springs couldn’t get through; our bug population had made a nice evening walk almost reach blood sacrifice proportions, and the wetland birds wouldn’t land here anymore. Following careful instructions so that we didn’t do something to destroy our little wetlands, Dan dug out gobs of thatch which is now lying in a 20 by 100 foot pile beside the lake and will need moved. However, the day before he was completely finished. We saw out first wetland bird stalking our creek; a young kingfisher. We hadn’t seen any in a very long time, so we’re tickled.
While Dan has been tied up, I got another book published which I will share with you next time. The puppies have all found new homes; the barn kittens are slowly being decimated we think by coyotes, and the cria are doing well. The CBW is learning to talk more clearly and make her needs known. She has a cold right now. She was playing by the waterfall with Uncle Scott and I think that may have been where she caught the sniffles.
